This annual report, EMEC's first, illustrates how the association established itself as a reliable association whose credibility and legitimacy derives from both the companies it represents and the input it provides to policy makers. It will continue to work for the benefit of the European marine equipment, shipbuilding and shipping sector as a whole, ensuring that maritime technology leadership, competitiveness and safety are consistently promoted by the EU and the other international institutions.
EMEC is steadily growing as it currently has 14 trade associations representing around 1500 companies. .
It is essential that there is effective policy throughout all levels of the association. Marine equipment manufacturers are indispensible within the policy making structure. Key societal needs have to be addressed at the request for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime transport. It is clear that the policy initiatives are trying to satisfy both societal and business needs. The point of contact is represented by sustainability. Sustainability goes hand in hand with quality.
It should be clear that any of the forthcoming challenges in the maritime sector can only be met by an engagement to quality in shipping and the shipbuilding industries. Of the 1500 trade associations we represent, 75% of them are SME's.
The marine equipment industry is currently well placed due to the diversification of its markets. This is not only in terms of geographical area, but also in industry sectors. One emerging opportunity, the marine equipment business can take advantage of, is the need to protect the environment. The manufacturing world needs to adapt their business models and promote the innovation of existing technologies being placed onboard ships, resulting in greener, cleaner and more efficient vessels.
