European Marine Equipment Council

EMECrid Research Strategy

The European marine equipment industry is a high value added sector.

Competing in a global market, a leading position cannot be sustained on prices alone. The industry derives its competitiveness through innovative and reliable high quality products.

Hence, Research, Innovation and Development (RID) are the keys to success.

EMEC, through its R&D Working Group called EMECrid has been committed to European RDI and the work of WATERBORNE Technology Platform. It has been closely involved with the setting up of priorities for the 3rd Call of the EC Research Framework Programme 7 (FP7) and collating ideas for the 4th Call, always bearing in mind the WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda and Implementation Agenda and Implementation Route Map.

To meet the market and societal expectations the industry must:

  • stay at the leading edge in technology
  • represent the best choice in performance and costs for the customers
  • meet the demands of a new regulatory regime of goal based standards
  • cope with the expected growth in maritime traffic
  • improve the “green” solution for maritime transport

These are few of the issues developed in the Research Strategy of the sector launched in 2006.

A matrix of the critical technologies in the maritime sector is available as well as details developed.
